Town of Pulteney Historian Report
May 2010

I am still working on the Glenview Cemetery records by putting them in a spreadsheet that can be sorted in several different
ways. This project will probably take several months. What I've discovered is that around 1888 the word "Cancer" started to be used
in the reason for death. There also seem to be several who died from Typhoid Fever from 1887 through 1889. Also some Scarlet
Fever, Malaria, and lots of "Consumption" (Tuberculosis), Dropsey (swelling of soft tissue usually due to Congestive Heart Failure),
and Childbirth deaths.
David Clancy called regarding the re-setting of stones in the Presbyterian Cemetery. He hopes to get started soon with this
year's work. So many stones are broken, that I'd like to try a special glue to put some of them back together. We'll probably try a
small sample first to see if it works well. I've gone on the internet to see how to repair them. It seems to be quite a task.
I had a visit from a man who lives in Penfield, NY. His wife is related to Reverend Reuben Pickett who was a Baptist Minister
from 1888 through 1892 here in Pulteney. Our best guess is that he serviced the "Free Will" Baptist Church at Pine Grove. I don't
know where it was located, but because he left Pulteney and went to the Penfield "Free Will" church, it seems like a logical
conclusion. Looking for this information made me realize how little I know about what we have in our records. I need to start
organizing and sorting the folders better. When I get started, it will be a monumental project. It makes me think I need to live to
a ripe old age of 220 years to even begin to get a handle on it !!!!!!!!!!!!

Requests for the Town of Pulteney Historian
May 2010
I received an e-mail from Shay Pickett again. He said he will be sending pictures and stories of the Picketts for our file. How
wonderful that will be.
William Robertson called from Jamestown, NY. He is doing research on the VanCamp and Hawley families. I found nothing in
Pulteney but will e-mail him with names & addresses to send him in the right direction. (Bath and Tyrone)
Joseph Earley has called me regarding research on the Earleys and Smiths. (In particular, Gretchen Smith. Her father owned
and ran the store and she ran the Oasis.) I can't seem to find anything regarding them. I'll have to do more research before I respond
to him.
I received a letter from Marian Siedzik from Spring Hill, Florida. She is researching the Weaver family. She enclosed a couple of
articles mentioning Captain Charles Porter Weaver born in Pulteney August 8th, 1828. Of course, our records don't go back that
far, but I'll see what I can find and write or e-mail her back.
These are the instances where better organization of our materials would be very nice.

A special thank you to Fred Schulte and Kenny Forenz for their time and energy in setting me up with a computer
and printer/copier that work better than ever.
