Town of Pulteney Historian Report
November 2009
The work on the headstones in the Old Presbyterian Cemetery has been completed. For this year. I also hope to be visiting the Shuart/Hyatt Cemetery in South Pulteney before winter sets in. Some names and dates need to be checked out by reading the stones.
The five additions to the “Military Wall” have been done. Others will be added as they are given to me.
John & Jean Eckel have given items of Bert and Bob Holley’s that were in the barn at their place. By luck, John just happened to take them in the house after he found them. That was the best thing he could’ve done because otherwise, they would have burned up when the barn burned. There are a lot of bank statements, bank books, canceled checks, a log book dated from 1886 to 1895 with items charged, who the person was that charged them, the date charged, the cost of each item and their payments. In another section of the ledger, there is a registry for the “Sunnyside Inn” from 1936 to 1945 and one entry from 1957. All the guests are from places like Virginia, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, etc. The only connection to Pulteney that I can find are Miss Mae Hess and Mr Ed Prentiss stayed there from September 4-9, 1936. Guests signed their names and addresses and what room they wre in. Has anyone ever heard of the “Sunnyside Inn”??? Another item is a pencil with Robert O Holley Hardware imprinted on it. Bert Holley ran a garage and Florence Holley ran a grocery store. Also, tax bills for Bert Holley in Pulteney and Bradford are in the group. Interesting stuff !!!!!!!
An ad in the Prattsburgh News in 1902 had a dentist named “Dr Pullar”!!!!!!!!!!
How appropriate is that ??
