Town of Pulteney Historian Report
October 2009
The “Military Wall” has been completed. There are just a few more pictures to add. I still haven’t finished the Cemetery listings that the Town has. I Have finished extracting the Pulteney burial records from the Steuben County listing.
The Farm-City Day at the Jack & Evelyn Drumm farm was a great success. Especially interesting to me was the Gloade’s Corner school house. I wish we had possessed more items to lend for the display.
Here’s an interesting inscription on the headstone of Mary Armstrong who died in 1836. She is buried in the Old Presbyterian Cemetery:
Stop travelers as you pass by,
As you are now so once was I;
As I am now so you must be,
Prepare yourselves to follow me.
I also ran across a poem written in the 1870’s
“The Onion”
Wrapt is this modern mummy
In ceaseless fold on fold;
Yet what a wondrous power
Those wondrous wrappings hold.
Of all the vegetables
From garden’s length to length
He is the one most mighty-----
Epitome of strength.
Where’er his person enters
All noses sniff the air,
And epicurean stomachs
For gastric treats prepare.
A subtle spirit rises
Of dinner in full bloom----
An appetizing odor
Pervading all the room.
When at the well-laid table,
How is the palate blest !
He betters other dishes,
Yet is himself the best.
But then call on a lady;
Why is her smile so grim?
Before a word in spoken
She knows you’ve been with him.
